A Brief History of the Quebec Winter Carnival
The Early Days of the Winter Carnival
The tradition of celebrating from late January to mid-February is not a recent one! In Quebec City, the snow capital of the world, the first major winter carnival was held in 1894.
A population often challenged by harsh winters organized a snow festival to lift spirits. Interrupted by the two world wars and the Great Depression of 1929, the Carnival reappeared sporadically until the second half of the century.
The Revival of the Carnival in 1954
In 1954, with the goal of boosting the economy of Old Quebec, a group of businesspeople revived the festival and chose Bonhomme as its official mascot. The first edition of the Quebec Winter Carnival took place in 1955.
An Unmissable Event
The Carnival quickly became a must-attend event for the people of Quebec City and a driving force for winter tourism in the area. Today, the Quebec Winter Carnival is undeniably a major winter event and remains a cornerstone of Quebec's winter culture.
